Emergency Planning
What You Need to Know...

What happens if there is a real emergency involving a release or spill of toxic chemicals on any local transportation route or facility? This article will provide the information you need in the event of such an incident. Following are the notification procedures, checklist of actions and what to expect if an evacuation order is given in your area.

An evacuation may be ordered if the community is threatened and there is time to evacuate everyone safely. The first thing you can anticipate in the event of a local hazmat emergency is activation of the Jefferson County Warning System and cable-TV override system. Official vehicles of police, fire and emergency management may drive through the area alerting residents. Your local WARNING sirens will sound a (high/low wail) to alert you to TURN ON THE RADIO and receive instructions. (WORX 96.7 FM, WIKI 95.3 FM, WMPI 105.3 FM, and WXGO 1270 AM are the emergency broadcast stations in the local area.) Upon notification of an impending or immediate emergency, you should:

- Watch the TV or listen to the local radio for instructions.

- Do not call 911.

- Follow directions given.

You and those in your area will be instructed on how to stay safe, at your present location or the evacuation site.

If you are instructed to evacuate, directions to the nearest shelters will be provided, as will the safest routes to use. Transportation may be provided from some areas and in situations where immediate medical attention is needed. You can go to another location instead of a shelter, but please let family or friends know where you are going and leave a note on the outside of your front door with this information. If a house-to-house check is required this information will be most helpful. Once at a shelter site, you and your family will check in and be made as comfortable as possible. Refreshments will be provided. Those with medical conditions are to notify shelter staff immediately, so that provisions may be made. Information centers will be set up to keep everyone updated. Stay in shelter until given permission by county officials to return to your area. Going back early can be dangerous and hinder work crews. Please respect the shelter workers' requests for registration and check-out procedures.

Weapons, illegal drugs and any alcohol are prohibited in shelter sites. Smoking will not be allowed inside the building. For the consideration and health of all persons, family pets will not be allowed inside the shelter building.
